UNDERWATER MUSEUM OF ART NAMED TO TIME MAGAZINE’S WORLD’S GREATEST PLACES 2018

SANTA ROSA BEACH, FL (August 24, 2018) – Yesterday, TIME revealed its first annual list of the World’s Greatest Places, which highlights 100 destinations that are breaking new ground, leading industry trends and offering visitors an extraordinary experience.

The Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) was included in the list of World’s Greatest Places in the Visit category. The UMA is the first presentation of the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County’s (CAA) Art In Public Spaces Program and was produced in collaboration with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) with a purpose to create art that becomes marine habitat, expanding fishery populations and providing enhanced creative, cultural, economic and educational opportunities for the benefit, education and enjoyment of residents, students and visitors in South Walton.

The UMA opened in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park in South Walton, Fla. on June 25, 2018. Seven sculptures became part of the inaugural UMA installation: “Propeller in Motion” by Marek Anthony, “Self-Portrait” by Justin Gaffrey, “The Grayt Pineapple” by Rachel Herring, “JYC’s Dream” by Kevin Reilly, “SWARA Skull” by Vince Tatum, “Concrete Rope Reef Spheres” by Evelyn Tickle and “Anamorphous Octopus” by Allison Wickey. A one-acre permit patch of seabed off Grayton Beach State Park has been dedicated for the purpose of a permanent underwater sculpture exhibit. The UMA patch will continue to be filled with several sculptures annually.

Admission to the UMA is free. No ticket or reservation is required. However, there is a fee to enter Grayton Beach State Park. The UMA is only accessible in person as a dive location. Divers who wish to visit the site can take a dive boat .7 miles off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park. The coordinates for the center sculpture (SWARA Skull) are Latitude N 30 18.754 Longitude W 86 09.522. Out of respect for the art, boaters are asked to find the center location and then move away from the park to anchor in order to avoid damage to the artwork. For non-divers, there are photos and videos of the sculptures online, which will be updated periodically to document the marine growth on each sculpture.

Artists interested in submitting artwork for consideration to the 2019 UMA installation can visit UMAFL.org to complete a pre-application.

“Uncorked” at East End Gallery

East End Gallery is proud to unveil its latest exhibition entitled “Uncorked”.

Uncorked is a powerful collaboration showcasing 74 new works by 30 local and regional artists.  Pieces were primarily selected for their success in capturing a spirit of openness. Local artists are showcased alongside other award-winning talent from Atlanta, Birmingham, Dallas and beyond.  The exhibition opened July 30th and the gallery is hosting two special events designed for the entire family this Friday, August 3rd.

First, during the SoWal Craft Beer and Spirits Festival at Shades Bar & Grill, a unique craft opportunity for kids will be hosted from 12pm-4pm.  Young artists will be able to create bottle cap garland with their names to hang over their own original art at home. All ages are welcome.

Following the festival and kids’ craft, First Friday ArtWalk will keep the celebration going.  ArtWalk provides the perfect opportunity to experience the “Uncorked” exhibition while also uncorking a few bottles of wine.

Whether you can attend Friday’s festivities or not, East End Gallery is certainly worth a visit.  The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm and Saturdays by appointment. It’s located at the east intersection of Highways 30A and 98, right behind Shades Bar & Grill.

For more information, call or text 850-252-5150.  See all the latest events and updates related to the gallery by following them on Instagram and liking them on Facebook at @eastend30a.

An Update from Artist Joan Vienot

As the volunteer coordinator of the Emerald Coast Plein Air Painters, Joan Vienot has her hands full, choosing sites across Okaloosa and Walton County where the group can meet to paint en plein air every Wednesday morning. Joan swears by the practice of plein air painting, finding that it has helped her to improve herself as a painter in every way, from composition, to mixing colors correctly, to capturing light and feeling, to professionally presenting her work. Selling her pool service business two years ago, Joan counts May 1 of this year as the date she can say she became a full-time artist, finally no longer required to consult or serve as contractor for the business she had owned. She says that her studio work is lightyears ahead of where it would be if she had not been practicing en plein air the whole while. Each Sunday evening finds Joan emailing more than 450 “members” to advise of the next Wednesday’s painting location and other news of interest to plein air painters. Usually anywhere from 3 to 15 painters show up. To join the email list, write to Joan@ECPleinAir.com. Joan laughs that she herself received the invitations for 8 years before she started coming! To see photos of the painters and paintings, visit www.Facebook.com/EmeraldCoastPleinAirPainters.
